Color

Split Complimentary

Monochromatic

Complimentary

Analagous

The color assignment was the third project of the year.  We focused on the color wheel and taking pictures with split complimentary, complimentary, monochromatic and analagous colors.  My favorite picture of the series was my split complimentary photo including the colors orange, purple and green.  I found the orange object on campus and never figured out exactly what is was, which made the photograph unique and thought provoking.  I added the purple flowers for two reasons; one because I needed it to become split complimentary, but also became the flowers had a softer shape as opposed to the harder shape of the orange object.  Overall, I really liked the split complimentary and thought it was the strongest and most impressive photograph.  The rest of the photos in the Color project were quite weak for all different reasons.  The angle of the monochromatic photo was not very interesting and the only reason I shot this photo was because of the monochromatic pinkish red colors.  The second photo had a slight shallow depth of field, which made it a little more diverse.  The complimentary photo and analagous photo were the weakest of the collection because the first one was shiny, blurry, out of focus and not an interesting photo at all.  The last photo of the tree and 10 MPH sign was the weakest of the group because it was shot from straight on and there was little intention in the shot.  Again, the photo was only taken because of the color scheme.  Although the purpose of this assignment was to learn the color wheel and how to take pictures with complimentary, monochromatic and other groups of colors, it forced me to focus more on the colors and less on the angle of the shot, composition and intention.

Leed Architecture

The leed architecture project was the second one of the year and was not terribly successful for me.  For the first picture of the grass I wanted to get the detail of the grass, but since it wasn't that interesting of a picture I added the leaf. I don't think that picture turned out very well.  My second picture was my favorite and most successful of the project because the viewer could see the depth in the photo while enjoying the close depth of field from the detail of the reed.  I also liked in the second picture how the background was almost completely out of focus, but you could still see that there were reeds in the background as well as the foreground.  The third picture was my second favorite of the project because it embraced the idea of the garden, which is important to Branson.  I liked how I composed the picture with the shovels and pile of dirt as well as seeing the garden and grass in the background.  My fourth picture was the least successful or least interesting one of the project because the angle I shot the photo at was not terribly interesting or unique.  Lastly, the photograph of the Commons was OK, but the fan was almost completely centered in the picture and the architecture was interesting but overall not that great of a picture.  This series for me was not that successful, but I learned more about taking pictures involving architecture and this assignment was a great learning experience.

The Unexpected Moment

My strongest photo is the one of Elise sketching in the foliage.  This is the strongest one because the figure is looking very focused and unaware of me taking the picture.  Even though this picture was taken on the Branson campus, it doesn't look as it is and this creates an unusual photo.  Also the natural light in the picture makes it even more beautiful, making this my best shot.

My weakest picture in this collection is the one of Katie and Cindy playing the piano.  I do not think this is a good picture because the background is so bright making the photo almost look fake.  The white is too white and using "recovery" in Aperture could have helped me avoid this problem.  I am also not particularly fond of the way I cropped this picture, my cutting off Cindy's arm.  This makes it look awkward and not my best picture.
